This Saturday, July 11, 2026, I will be riding my bicycle to Kenosha, WI and back to raise money for the Henry Schueler 41 & 9 Foundation.
I became involved in this cause because a neighbor and close friend’s son (Henry Schueler) died 19 years ago at the age of 14 of an invasive mucor fungal infection (and the underlying leukemia) which progressed to his brain causing a massive intracranial bleed.
Kind, creative, and athletic, Hank was the older kid on the block that my boys wanted to be with and be like.
Hank’s death inspired the birth of a foundation dedicated to raising funds to address conditions of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) and the life-threatening fungal infections that can develop due to weakened immune systems that result from cancer treatments.
The foundation supports research at the Mullighan Lab at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital which continues to drive the world’s leading research of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and related disorders. We continue to fund a full-time clinical researcher, Pankaj Ghate, within the lab who studies Hypodiploid ALL, the subtype of ALL that Henry had.
We also support the work of Dr. Thomas Walsh, the Henry Schueler Scholar on Mucormycosis, one of the world’s leading experts on infectious disease and specifically fungal infections like Mucormycosis which Hank contracted after his leukemia returned after his bone marrow transplant
Dr. Walsh provides clinical expertise to patients worldwide who suffer from Mucormycosis and provides mentorship of the next generation of physicians and scientists who will continue his research.
Your donation will continue to support this critical research and clinical outreach that our Foundation originated and continues to fund to help fulfill Hank’s vision to find out why this happened to him, so we can prevent it from happening to other kids.
